Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum

At the Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum, we welcome our guests to an enchanting art universe and diverse cultural experiences in the form of special exhibitions featuring CoBrA-artists, lectures, concerts, guided tours, activities for children, and much more. For the audience, there are always new experiences to be seen as we present 3-4 different hangings throughout the year with selected works from the museum’s extensive collection and other artists that provide perspective on the art historical significance of Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelt.

The museum houses a unique collection of over 6000 paintings, watercolors, sculptures, mosaics, etc., by the artist couple Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelt, the majority of which were generously donated by Carl-Henning Pedersen himself to the city of Herning before the museum opened in 1976.

With its moat and ceramic tiles populated by magical creatures and freely floating fantasy figures in red, green, and blue, the original round museum building stands as a tribute to Carl-Henning Pedersen’s expressive, beloved fable art. In 1993, the pyramid-shaped extension was added – as a tribute to Else Alfelt’s lyrically abstract mountain landscapes – and in 2015, the museum was expanded with an underground passage between the existing museum building and Angligården, where you’ll find Carl-Henning Pedersen’s monumental mosaic from 1968, “The Play of Fantasy about the Wheel of Life.”
