Vendsyssel Historical Museum
Vendsyssel Historical Museum in Hjørring serves as a central hub for the narrative of North Jutland’s rich past. The museum is housed in atmospheric buildings surrounding the old deanery, where the historical setting and the award-winning museum garden create a unique ambiance for visitors. The exhibits range from impressive archaeological finds from ancient times to engaging cultural-historical exhibitions that shed light on human life and conditions through the centuries.
Currently, the museum presents a grim side of history in the exhibition “The Face of Crime” (Forbrydelsens Ansigt), which focuses on capital punishment and features the severed head of Thomas Bisp. This narrative is complemented by “Vendsyssel Occupied” (Vendsyssel Besat), providing profound insight into daily life and resistance during the German occupation, as well as “In the Shadows” (I Skyggen), which honors the pioneering work of Denmark’s first female photographers. With these diverse stories and ongoing activities throughout the year, the museum succeeds in making history relevant and vibrant for both children and adults.
