Museum for Denmark's Most Famous Polar Explorer
The House of Knud Rasmussen
Knud Rasmussen’s House is a charming museum dedicated to Denmark’s most famous polar explorer. Visitors can experience the authentic atmosphere of the house as it appeared 100 years ago. Here, you can explore the annual special exhibition and learn more about Knud Rasmussen’s extraordinary life and his many polar expeditions. The well-stocked museum shop offers everything from ice cream and water to sled dog plush toys, sealskin bracelets, and Arctic schnapps.
The house is situated on a large open plot with an unobstructed view of the Kattegat. In 1936, an impressive memorial cairn was erected on the grounds in honor of the polar explorer. Spodsbjerg Lighthouse stands over the cairn at the highest point in the area. Knud Rasmussen’s House is the perfect starting point for a lovely walk or hike.
The house was built in 1917 as a summer residence for Knud Rasmussen and his family. However, it was primarily used as Knud Rasmussen’s workspace—a retreat far from the city, fame, and distractions. In Hundested, he found the peace to focus on his manuscripts, plan new expeditions, and meet with friends, colleagues, and other writers in beautiful surroundings. In 1939, Knud’s widow, Dagmar, donated the house to the public, and it has been a museum ever since.
