Hirtshals Museum
Hirtshals Museum is an authentic gem that offers a unique insight into the identity of the fishing town and the harsh conditions along the West Coast. The museum is housed in a charming fisherman’s home from 1880, built from fieldstones, with the main house reconstructed as an interior from 1915. Through the permanent exhibition “Hirtshals by the Sea,” the story of the town’s close bond with the water is told, including Engineer Fibiger’s impressive harbor construction, ferry traffic to our Nordic neighbors, and dramatic accounts of shipwrecks and rescues.
A central part of the museum’s soul is the story of “bjesk” – the national drink of Vendsyssel. The museum honors nurse Signe Hansen’s extensive knowledge of dune plants, and in the exhibition, visitors can learn about the many herbs that give the golden drops their characteristic flavor. As a living tradition, guests can bring their own neutral schnapps on weekdays and have it transformed into an authentic bjesk according to old recipes. During the summer, the museum garden buzzes with life as “Fiskekrogen” serves fish dishes and traditional crafts such as rope making and net making are brought back to life.
