A place for everyone

Esrum Abbey & Møllegård

Esrum Abbey & Møllegård is your serene retreat in North Zealand, offering ample space for reflection, immersion, and play.

Just a short walk from the parking lot, over the bridge and Esrum stream, you’ll find yourself in the midst of Danish history: From the founding of Esrum Abbey by the French Cistercian order in 1151, through the Reformation in 1536 when the abbey was taken over by the crown, to today, where it stands as a unique experiential attraction.

History, Exhibitions, and More

Delve into the life of the monks with exhibitions that include a sensory experience, where you can step into a captivating light installation accompanied by the monks’ chants. Try on a pair of VR glasses and embark on a virtual-reality journey through the once-grand Esrum Abbey complex.

The watermill at Møllegården is also worth a visit—it remains functional and is used on special occasions.

Beautiful Nature

Esrum Abbey is located north of Lake Esrum with direct access to Gribskov. Behind the abbey, you’ll find the cloister garden, home to over 150 different plants and herbs once cultivated by the monks. In the summer months, sheep and lambs graze freely on the abbey meadow. The area features a stream, forest, nature playground, and an extensive trail system with marked cycling and hiking routes leading into Royal North Zealand National Park.

The Mill Cafe and Abbey Shop

The Mill Cafe serves delicious lunches made with seasonal ingredients. Everything is homemade and primarily organic, prepared by passionate chefs and students from Kilden, a social enterprise that trains young people with special needs.

In the abbey shop, you’ll find a wide selection of quality goods. Uniquely, the shop sources delicacies and fragrant creams directly from French monasteries. Additionally, you’ll find a rotating, handpicked selection of wool blankets, shawls, books, outdoor gear, games, and toys, as well as Esrum Abbey’s own products, including beer, honey, mead, and more.

Admission is free to all outdoor areas, the nature playground, café, and shop.

Guided tours are held every weekend and are included in the entrance ticket to the old abbey.
