Something for everyone
Daugbjerg Limestone Mines
Daugbjerg Limestone Mines is Denmark’s oldest hand-excavated limestone mine. With a history spanning over 1000 years, a visit here takes you back to the lives of hardworking men, women, and children and offers insight into one of the first export agreements. Limestone from Daugbjerg has been used in the construction of many churches in both Denmark and Germany since the advent of Christianity. In 1872, limestone production ceased in Daugbjerg, and in 1922, the mines were reopened as a tourist attraction.
Daugbjerg Limestone Mines is located in the beautiful, fully protected Dybdal Forest, where the landscape features many old mine entrances, sinkholes, and rare flora. The area is rich in wildlife, and on the marked trails, you may encounter trolls and troll children.
Today, Daugbjerg Limestone Mines is a tourist attraction with an adjoining café and function room. Here, you can satisfy your hunger, enjoy yourself by the campfire, host your party, and much more.
Inside the mines, you can see the man-made tunnels, and during the season, thousands of bats hang and cling to the ceilings and walls. Daugbjerg Limestone Mines is one of Northern Europe’s most important hibernation sites for several species of bats, including the Water Bat, the rarer Pond Bat, and the long-eared bat, among others. At dusk, they can be seen flying in and out of the entrance, except when they are in winter hibernation.
Historically, Daugbjerg Limestone Mines is also the place where the feared and legendary Jens Langkniv hid. Over 400 years ago, the bandit took refuge in the mines, and many stories are tied to his life of robbery and his fight against German troops during the Thirty Years’ War. Besides Jens Langkniv, there are also stories of witches and trolls in the mines.
For children of all ages, there are opportunities for free treasure hunts in the mines and troll hunting in the forest. Additionally, with advance reservation, you can try your hand at our treasure trail/escape room. If you dare, there is also the possibility of overnight stays in the mines; contact Daugbjerg Limestone Mines for more information.
Our parking lot offers space for caravans and motorhomes, and it is allowed to stay overnight for one night when visiting the mines.
