The Museum of Viking Ships and Seafaring

The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde

Get up close to Viking life, craftsmanship, and impressive ships at the Viking Ship Museum. The museum tells the story of how the Vikings changed the world with their ships – without ships, no Viking Age.

The Viking Ship Museum is centered around the five original Viking ships from Skuldelev. They are part of a global narrative about ships, people, and items on the move.

There are experiences and activities both on the museum island and inside the Viking Ship Hall, where the nearly 1000-year-old Viking ships are exhibited, with panoramic views of the fjord as a backdrop.

Feel the breeze of history

As the only place in the world, museum guests during the summer season can go directly from experiencing the original Viking ships in the Viking Ship Hall to the active museum harbor, where full-size reconstructions of Viking ships are moored. Explore the 30-meter-long Sea Stallion – the world’s largest reconstructed Viking ship and the museum’s other reconstructions.

From May 1 to September 30, guests can sail out on the Roskilde Fjord in Nordic clinker-built boats, built at the museum’s boatyard using the same principles and methods as the Vikings used 1000 years ago. The Nordic clinker boat traditions are included on UNESCO’s list of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.

The Museum Mystery – a treasure hunt for the whole family

In the Useeum app, you can experience audio guides for the Viking Ship Museum for both children and adults. You can also take the whole family on the treasure hunt Museum Mystery, where you must prevent the mischievous villain Heidenreich from stealing the museum’s greatest treasure.

You can find the Viking Ship Museum in the Useeum app here.
