The Viking Museum Fyrkat
Get up close to the Viking Age at Fyrkat, one of Denmark’s five ring fortresses.
Fyrkat Fortress was built in 980 under King Harald Bluetooth. None of the original ring fortresses exist today, but at Fyrkat, an earthen wall marks where the ring fortress once enclosed the original 16 longhouses. The locations of the houses are now marked with white stones. Just outside the fortress, one of the longhouses has been reconstructed.
Near Fyrkat Fortress lies the viking farmstead, consisting of nine reconstructed houses that together form a chieftain’s farm, similar to those from Harald Bluetooth’s time. Both residential houses and workshops, including the blacksmith’s shop, are built of oak timber with clay-plastered walls and thatched roofs. Throughout the summer, on selected days, there are activities at the Viking farmstead, which also features a visitor center, a museum shop, and a mythological playground.
