Explore the museum’s special exhibitions, join guided tours, or enjoy the outdoors and a packed lunch in the scenic Bregninge Hills, a wonderful recreational area. We’re open from June 1st to September 30th.
Step into the old captain’s house, featuring original furnishings and items from distant lands. Wander through the folklore collection, showcasing traditional costumes, wedding dresses, and artifacts from Taasinge’s historic crafts.
The internationally renowned story of circus performer Elvira Madigan and Swedish Count Sixten Sparre’s tragic love affair is the museum’s main attraction. Through original period artifacts, the exhibit tells the tale of their doomed romance, which unfolded in Svendborg and Troense on Taasinge in the summer of 1889.
The exhibit includes a few original items they left behind. The couple met their fate in Nørreskoven, just 2.5 km from the museum. This story holds a special place here—guests can drive 10 minutes from the museum to visit the memorial stone or make the short trip to Landet Churchyard, where they are buried. Both are highly recommended stops.
Visit the Music House, home to the largest provincial collection of musical instruments, donated by local schoolteacher and musician Bent Nielsen, who spent a lifetime gathering them. Bent Nielsen’s collection is unique because each instrument has been played, carrying stories of the people who owned them or enjoyed their sounds.
Enjoy the museum’s carefully tended and beautifully designed garden with old fruit trees, bushes, a kitchen garden, and a flower garden, just as gardens would have looked when the oldest museum buildings were new.
Mysteriet om Elvira Madigan
Through the Useeum app, experience the dramatized podwalk Mysteriet om Elvira Madigan (only available in Danish), which takes you along Elvira and Sixten’s final walk deep into Nørreskoven.
