Selsø Slot

Selsø Slot is a manor house museum located in Hornsherred, rich with atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy fascinating tours, concerts, and events, and the cozy café serves delightful cakes.

The last resident of the main building passed away in 1829, meaning there was never water, electricity, or heating installed. Life around the manor continued with estate operations, and during the 144 years the house stood empty, it served as a pheasantry, a grain storage, and a secret playground for local children.

In the early 1970s, journalist Bernhard Linder and his wife, Grete, embarked on excavations, aiming to establish a museum on the site. The couple uncovered the remarkable manor, which, while appearing rough and unpolished, retains its unique charm. Light fills the rooms through large, paned windows, 19th-century wallpapers are preserved, and mirrors on the walls have hung there for over 250 years.

As you walk through the many rooms, you get a strong sense of the lives that have been lived within the castle. Tales abound of the “White Lady” who is said to wander restlessly through the castle. In one room, you can still see a bloodstain—a mark from a fateful night long ago.

Selsø Slot is situated near the bird reserve at Selsø sø. There are lovely trails for stretching your legs in the area, along with a beautiful view over Roskilde Fjord, with the cathedral visible in the distance.
