Frederikshavn Kunstmuseum is for everyone—not just those with a special interest in art.
We aim to be more than just a local art museum. Frederikshavn is our focal point, our foundation, but a museum that remains too rooted in one place risks becoming stagnant, oversimplified, and uninteresting. That is why we must look beyond the borders of our municipality and aim higher. Frederikshavns kunstmuseum should be an attractive venue for exhibitions featuring the best artists.
Founded in 1978, Frederikshavns Kunstmuseum strives to be more than ‘just’ a museum. We want to be an integrated part of the city—a lively place, a space that does more than simply hang art on the walls. We offer lectures, music, theater, an art school, tastings, and more.
Our presence extends beyond our own premises. We collaborate with Palads Teatret on art films, with the local theater association, Maskinhallen, and the Coastal Museum of Northern Jutland to offer a cultural pass for young people. We also work with Frederikshavn Hospital, which serves as a ‘branch’ of the museum. Art should reach the people of Frederikshavn—and the city’s many visitors—because, in the words of Bertolt Brecht: “Die Kunst ist ein Luxus, den der Mensch braucht”. This quote adorns our facade and is part of the city’s Poetry Park.
