A Tale of Danish Total Defense History

Aalborg Defence and Garrison museum

In today’s world filled with wars and conflicts, the historical wars of the past continue to leave their marks on our lives. At the Aalborg Defense and Garrison Museum, you can gain insight into the current situation through past conflicts with exhibitions covering the German occupation of Denmark from 1940 to 1945, the Cold War from 1945 to 1991, the period when Aalborg served as a refugee camp for German refugees from 1945 to 1949, and Aalborg’s role as Denmark’s most important garrison town over the years.

Through fascinating exhibitions, you can explore the significant developments that have taken place within the Army, Air Force, Home Guard, Police, and Emergency Services (formerly Civil Defense).

Here, you have the opportunity to get up close to history, exploring and touching armored vehicles, fighter jets, and weapons. The exhibits are brought to life with audio stories, such as the tale of former fighter pilot Captain Kræn Hjortlund, who intercepted Russian aircraft over Bornholm during the Cold War.

The museum is housed in a massive hangar from World War II, built by the Germans at the seaplane base they established in Aalborg in 1940—an interesting experience in its own right.

We look forward to your visit!
